Market Keeps Prosperous during the 2013 Spring Festival

There was a brisk buying and selling in the golden week at 2013 Spring Festival, with a sufficient and rich supply. According to the monitoring by MOFCOM, from the New Year’s Eve to the 6th of the first month by the lunar calendar, the sales volume of national major retailing and catering enterprises reached 539 billion yuan, up by 14.7% compared with that at the 2012 Spring Festival. The main characteristics are as follows:

I. Strong festival atmosphere

Business nationwide seized the opportunity of the Spring Festival to hold various promotion activities. Beijing held the activity of “celebrating the 2013 Spring Festival in Beijing”. Heilongjiang held “2013 New Year’s Shopping of Longjiang”, and Ningxia held the activity of “Snake Waves for Spring Festival, and Blessings Go to all Households”, which reinforced the joyous atmosphere for the market during the Spring Festival. The sales of major monitored enterprises in Henan, Hubei, Tianjin, Chongqing and Hebei increased by 18.0%, 17.5%, 17.2%, 16.2% and 15.9% respectively compared with that of last Spring Festival.

II. Consumption highlights

During the Spring Festival, the market is prosperous and pluralistic. Festive traditional consumption occupied the main market, and the rigid demand such as foods, clothes and daily necessities maintained stable growth. Goods for New Year were prosperous in purchasing and selling. According to the statistics of major monitored retailing enterprises, the sales of foodstuff and drinks increased by 9.8% and 11.2% respectively year on year. The sales of goods for use during the Spring Festival in supermarkets in Guangxi and Hunan rose by over 20%. Gold, silver and jewelries were on hot sale. The Valentine’s Day was in the Spring Festival this year, which added the sweet atmosphere and the gold, silver and jewelry market reached the consumption peak. The sales of gold, silver and jewelries of major monitored enterprises increased 38.1%. Garments, shoes and hats were popular. Winter garments were on sale and spring garments of new styles newly arrived. The sales of garments, shoes and hats of national major monitored retailing enterprises rose by 6.3% and 7.5% respectively. The sales of Nanjing Xinbai Mall, Zhengzhou Department Store and Zhumadian Leshan Mall were all above 30%. Digital products of latest model sold well: electronic products such as digital cameras, cell phones, tablets and single-lens reflex cameras were favorites for New Year shopping. The sales of top digital products such as iPads and iPhones of major monitored trading enterprises in Nanjing during the Spring Festival increased by about 36%.

III. Leisure consumption in a healthy way is very popular

Celebrating the Spring Festival in a healthy and leisure way becomes more and more popular for people. In addition to traditional items such as visiting temple fairs and enjoying folk custom, going skiing, having SPA, appreciating early spring blossoms and other healthy and wholly new ways of celebration bring a refreshing sensation for people in both the South and North China. Beijing Changdian Temple Fair received visitors from home and abroad up to 333 thousand within five days, with the folk custom like Fengxiang clay sculpture in Guanzhong area of Shaanxi Province and shadow puppet play as their favorites. 300 thousand tulips in Yuntai Garden of Guangzhou city raced to bloom, making visitors hardly tear themselves away from it. More than eight thousand tropical orchids were in full blossom in Wuhan Botanical Garden, feasting citizen’s eyes on such beatuties. Daily reception of four ski resorts in Chongli County of Hebei Province amounted to over 20 thousand on average and SPA tickets were like gold dust in Xianning city of Hubei Province. Walking into the nature, experiencing rural lives and feasting eyes on idyllic scene are hot options for people’s relaxation. Visitors reached over 100 thousand in total in Yanling county of Hunan Province during the Festival; a huge number of people swarmed in Wild Duck Lake scenic spot in Kunming city and all the hotel rooms had already been early reserved; and farmhouses in Changxing and Anji counties of Zhejiang Province were very hard to find.

IV. Simple and economical dinners are common practice

Catering markets emerge a new fashion in this Spring Festival that simplicity and economy are much more than extravagance and waste. From the view of consumption options, there is a sharp decline in turnovers of top-grade hotels, food ingredients and spirits. According to the statistics, the turnover of top-grade hotels monitored in Zhejiang Province are down over 20% compared to that in last Spring Festival. By contrast, those restaurants which are affordable by most ordinary people and focus on dinners of family reunion on Chinese Lunar New Year’s Eve or the gatherings of relatives and friends are experiencing hot sale all over China. Besides, restaurants in several regions including Beijing, Hebei, Zhejiang, Shandong, Henan and Chongqing offer to the customers “half-portioned” or “assorted” dishes, different sizes of plates and free service for package. During the Festival, the turnover of catering enterprises monitored in Tianjin, Hubei, Shanghai and Henan increased by 18.5%, 15.5%, 6.0% and 5.3% respectively.

V. Rural consumption saw an increase
Farmers’ incomes and living standards have improved under the agricultural beneficial policies, and the rural market was rich and colorful during the Spring Festival atthe Year of the Snake, with strong consumption growth. A variety of trade fairs, sales andfestival bazaar were held by contractors and rural shops of the “Ten Thousands of Villages and Thousands of Townships” project in Hubei and Qingdao, and farmers were able to enjoy the convenience and benefits at home like those citizens. In Shandong and Gansu, driving cars to visitfriends and relatives has become the new fashionfor peasants in Lunar New Year, and driving cars to purchase gifts also has driven up consumption in rural market. According to monitoring, commercial sales of some enterprises in Wuqing of Tianjindoubled during the Spring Festival, and sales of some business enterprises in suburbs of Beijing likeShunyi and Huairourose by over 17% year-on-year, sales of sampled enterprises in suburbs and counties of Shanghai were up by 15.3% year-on-year, and sales of food, alcohol, tobacco, dairy products and fruits in rural market of Qingdao were up by over 12%.

VI. Daily necessities supply remained steady
Supply of daily necessities in 36 medium and large cities is abundant, and the price remained stable during the Spring Festival. According to monitoring by MOFCOM, the wholesale price of meat rose slightly compared with that of the previous week, and the price of lamb, beef and pork were up by 1.9%, 1.3% and 0.9% respectively. The average wholesale price of 18 types of vegetables was up by 0.6%. Retail price of eggs also rose slightly, and of chicken and eggs were up by 0.3%. The retail price of grain and oil rose steadily, with peanut oil, soybean oil and small package of rice up by 0.3%, 0.2% and 0.2% respectively, of small package of flour remained unchanged, and of rapeseed oil was down by 0.2%. Retail price of sugar remained unchanged.
